To pursue his passion for music, he attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, where he earned a visual arts degree. In this school, he met Dana Dane, and they created a small band and would perform in school or small functions and also partake in musical competitions.

His skills attracted the attention of many people, and Doug E. Fresh was one of them. He offered Slick to join his band, which he accepted. At that time, he was only eighteen. From here, his successful career started, making him the famous rapper he is today.

Slick Rick started his career in 1984. He entered a music hunt competition with his friend Dana Dane, where he grabbed the attention of Doug E. Fresh. Doug was thoroughly impressed by his vocal skills and decided to make him a part of his band “Get Fresh Crew.” Slick accepted his offer, and they both began working on songs together.

In 1985, he and Doug released two singles titled “The Show” and “La Di Da Di.” Both songs were a major hit and received an enormously positive response. People loved Slick’s voice with Dough’s beatbox, and soon, it became an international hit song. Because of it, his popularity increased to new heights, and many labels decided to recruit him because of his potential.

In 1986, Slick joined Def Jam Record, the top label of that time. After joining Def Jam, he released his debut album, “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.” This album was a blockbuster hit and reached the number one place on Billboard and hip-hop charts. The album was a perfect mixture of excellent storytelling and exceptional vocal skills, which became the reason for his massive success.

In 1989, his mother appointed Slick’s cousin Plummer as his bodyguard, but he was not sincere with his job. He used shady means and tried to rob Slick of his money; therefore, he fired him. This didn’t settle with Plummer, who threatened to kill him and his mother.

Slick took it lightly initially, but when he found bullet holes on his door one day, he got enraged and bought weapons for defense. In 1990, he found Plummer near his house, so he fired four bullets at him. Along with Plummer, a passerby was injured because of his reckless shooting. Soon the police arrived and detained him.

In 1994, Slick released his third album titled “Behind Bars.” This album was also a disaster and wasn’t liked by people. But with time, it got a fifty-one place on Billboard 200 chart.

In 1997, Slick was released from jail. After completing his punishment, he changed himself thoroughly. He began giving lectures to kids on violence and how it destroys life. In 1999, he released his fourth album, “The Art of Storytelling.”

This album was a significant hit, and it broke his previous records. People loved it a lot and appreciated his exceptional vocal skills. The album stole the number one position on the hip-hop chart and eighth on the Billboard chart.

In 2002, Slick was again arrested for his illegal stay in the US. He remained in prison for seventeen months before the matter reached court.
